Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is proud to be a founding member of The Choose Kindness Alliance, a coalition of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations championing bullying prevention, intentional inclusion, and youth mental wellness.
The Choose Kindness Project is an initiative, guided by the 20+ members of the alliance and supported by ABC, ESPN, and the Walton Family Foundation, dedicated to inspiring a more inclusive world where all young people feel empowered to be themselves and safe to create the futures they imagine.
We provide service to address opioid misuse prevention, targeting women and girls in the Greater Baton Rouge region. The aim of the Program is to develop and implement prevention strategies, educational activities, specifically tailored to address the unique needs of women across the lifespan. The United States has seen an alarming rise in overdose deaths from prescription painkillers and nonprescription opioids among women. A unique combination of biological, health, and social factors has led to the growing opioid epidemic among women.

In Louisiana, the total number of opioid-related deaths was 305 in 2016. When comparing Louisiana to national rates, Louisiana is among the upper-range states with a drug overdose rate of 15.1-18.4 deaths per 100,000 population, and a rate of 9.4-10.3 per 1,000 > age 12 for past year opioid abuse or dependence (CDC, 2016). The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s office reports show that overdose deaths for all drugs have risen from 64 to 89 from 2014 to 2016. Of the drug overdose deaths for 2016, 34 out of the 89 (38%) deaths were related to heroin overdose.

Use of prescription painkillers appears to be a driving force behind the marked increase in opioid overdoses. The CDC reports that since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the United States nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.
​
Deaths from prescription opioids—drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and methadone—have more than quadrupled since 1999. Geographical differences in opioid prescription rates are also evident, with Southern states showing the highest rates. Louisiana has one of the highest rates of opioid prescriptions in the entire United States, and actually has more opioid prescriptions than people. Unfortunately, tolerance to opioid drugs, over time, and difficulty in obtaining prescription opiates causes many to turn to the black market for these drugs, or switch from prescription drugs to cheaper and more risky substitutes like heroin.

Our plan uses evidence-based practices, with the goal to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills to address the opioid epidemic in the Greater Baton Rouge community.

We provide community support, skills training, counseling and crisis intervention to our program participants. Our job readiness and retention classes – resume/career development workshops and computer training program assist each participant after release with the skills needed for today’s workplace. Our Parenting Wisely Program – for all ladies and Parenting Inside Out, BRED – Baton Rouge Empowering Dads for men ages 18-25 are both evidence base programs created to give parents that are incarcerated an alternative to effective positive communication skills.
Reducing the recidivism rate affects the entire community. Mirror of Grace Outreach considers this area of focus an important part of our vision for an improved community. Our supportive programs and services through Reentry prepare the incarcerated population for release and after into society.

We offer our returning citizens the Soft Skills and Technology training needed to become successful in the Workforce. We offer Mentoring and encouragement in Leadership, Team Building ,Winning Attitude, Time Management, Becoming a Role Model, Improving Focus, Creative Thinking, and Professional Etiquette.

A key to reducing recidivism is providing education and awareness with economic opportunities. This is an important step in assisting returning citizens to become productive members of our communities by being an example for others in the community. By implementing these educational programs that provides awareness, opportunities, behavior development, financial and personal growth, participants may appreciate the need and want to pursue productive and rewarding lives. If you have or know someone that is incarcerated, please encourage them to enroll in one of these program.
BRED (Baton Rouge Empowering Dads) offers invaluable mentoring opportunities through our comprehensive Reentry program. Specifically tailored for participants aged 18-25, our Parenting Inside Out initiative has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in reducing recidivism rates and criminal behaviors. Moreover, it plays a pivotal role in enhancing family dynamics, refining parenting skills, and providing essential job readiness training. Through Parenting Inside Out, participants not only undergo a transformative journey of self-improvement but also cultivate stronger bonds with their children and families, fostering a sense of purpose and direction for a more promising future.

In line with our commitment to supporting fathers through every stage of their journey, our Mentoring program provides crucial guidance and encouragement to individuals both during their time of incarceration and post-release. By instilling a sense of focus and determination, we empower fathers to navigate the challenges of rebuilding their lives with resilience and optimism. Our mentors serve as steadfast allies, offering support, practical advice, and motivational guidance to ensure that each participant stays on course toward achieving personal and professional success.
Through our ReEntry Men Mentoring Program, we are dedicated to empowering fathers with the tools, resources, and support they need to overcome obstacles and thrive in their transition back to society.
